Daily thoughts straight from the horse's mouth!

Thursday 25th February 2021

News broke yesterday that amateur jockeys will not be permitted at the Cheltenham Festival. This is a huge blow for so many and it must be tough to take. It is also a huge loss for the festival, the amateur jockeys are such a huge part of the whole event and not having them there will be very bizarre.

The big two in my eyes are Jamie Codd and Patrick Mullins, the former has stated with intent that he has no intention of turning professional however I do wonder what Patrick will do. He will miss some huge rides, Kilcruit in the Champion bumper comes to mind. I would be surprised if he does not turn pro to make sure he gets to ride at the festival. He is a key member in the Mullins team and not having him there would be a huge disadvantage.

I am not entirely sure what will happen with regards to the races that were originally ‘amateur jockeys only’. I guess time will tell.

Rumours seem to be circulating that the Grand National will be moved back a week to allow for betting shops to reopen, while there are also calls for Royal Ascot to be moved back a week.

I understand the first one, April 12th does strike me as a date set in stone and that would make sense from a financial point of view.

The second point however baffles me, there is no guarantee that there will not be a delay in the government’s time frame and there is more likely to be delays on step 4 than there would be on step 2.

The logistics of planning for maximum capacity, selling those tickets and then spectators not being allowed would be a nightmare. Why take the risk when you can stage the event with some spectators and no risk just a week prior…

A nice winner yesterday with Uzinsco, that is four wins from his last five and he remains on a steep upward curve. Keep Album on side moving forward, not Marco’s finest hour in the saddle to say the least.

We head over to Meydan today, we start there in the 3.05…
